Short Introduction to Kaiju No. 8

For many years, grotesque, Godzilla-like creatures known as “kaijuu” have terrorized Japan. The Defense Corps, an elite military unit, puts their lives on the line daily to protect civilians from these monsters. Once a kaijuu is vanquished, the Professional Kaijuu Cleaner Corporation deploys “sweepers” to dispose of its remains.

Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old sweeper, is discontented with his job. From childhood, he aspired to join the Defense Corps and battle kaijuus. Although he abandoned these ambitions after failed attempts and settled for a steady job, his desires are rekindled when an ambitious 18-year-old newcomer named Leno Ichikawa joins his cleaning team.

Through a series of events and an encounter with a junior sweeper, Kafka encounters a parasite-type kaijuu, which transforms him into a humanoid monster. Empowered by his newfound abilities, Kafka resolves to make a final attempt at achieving his lifelong dream.
